What do you consider before buying a smartphone?

Smartphones these days have become an integral part of lives. This is because they have been built to serve you with almost all the features of a computer such as surfing the internet, keeping documents, taking pictures and even to charge other smartphones.

Smartphones are even cheaper to get compared to laptops and desktop computers but due to the varieties of different brands like Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Tecno, Oppo, Motorola, Infinix, Nokia, LG, Huawei, HTC and many more, it becomes difficult to decide which one is best for you needs. Just because it is an iPhone or Android doesn't mean it'll suit all your needs or just because you got the phone for an expensive price doesn't mean it has all the best features included in it. The most essential factors to consider should neither be the price nor the manufacturer but the guide that we have put together to assist you.

So in no particular order I'll be sharing with you top most essential factors to consider before you get new smartphone.

  • Battery capacity
  • Quality/Durability
  • Security
  • Processor
  • RAM
  • Internal storage/ROM
  • Camera
  • User interface/OS version
  • Display
  • Cost/Price
  • Availability of accessories

BATTERY CAPACITY

Are you always playing games? Do you like streaming videos? or Do yo see yourself running multiple applications simultaneously? heavy online activities tend to drain batteries faster though battery usage differs from user to user and buying a smartphone with low battery capacity means you will have to charge your phone frequently. If you fall in any of the categories listed above, a smartphone of at least 3000mAh and above is good enough to run for a long time. and then again, ensure to get a smartphone that has fast charging technology like Quick charge and Xcharge as this allows the phone to charge faster than even expected.

DURABILITY/QUALITY

Durability of a smartphone is one attractive features that gives good impression about a phone. Everyone that wants to get a smartphone would definitely pick a phone with strong quality. Most phones are made up of plastic or metal body, however, you may find other phones that are designed with glass but they are very few in the market. If you are not very careful with handling phones, you are advised to get a metal type or plastic type because these type can substain a drop from 2-3 feet but if you are the fancy and careful kind of person, the glass type would definitely suit you.

SECURITY

Most smartphones these days come with extra security features like fingerprint, iris scanner or maybe face unlock that enables users to lock and unlock their devices with ease and also encrypt access to some applications and files. If a smartphone lacks good security, hackers and fraudsters can easily gain access to it and steal important stuffs like documents, bank account details and other confidential informations that's why you should get a smartphone with fingerprint sensor and face unlock and you can get it for a cheap amount. It'd be wise for you to buy a smartphone with a extra security features so as to secure personal informations from hackers and fraudsters.

PROCESSOR

The processor is an important part of any smartphone. When you open any application, the time it takes to open depends on the processor. If a smartphone has a good processor and it's well built, it doesn't lag and you can even multitask, play heavy games without any occurence of lagging.

Every smartphone has its own processing power and there are lots of processors out there like Qualcomm Snapdragon, MediaTek, Apple Mobile Processors, HiSilicon and so on. Here is a simple trick, look at the processing speed that is expressed in GigaHertz (GHz). The higher the speed, the faster the processor. If you do a lot of editing, play heavy online games, stream videos online, opt for a smartphone with faster processor like Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 or Snapdragon 820/821/855+ but if you're a light user a MediaTek processor is considerable.

RAM
The RAM (Random Access Memory) and the processor determines the speed of a smartphone and its ease of operation.

INTERNAL STORAGE/ROM

ROM is what most people refer to as the internal storage of a smartphone and the OS occupies a large storage together with pre-installed applications, videos, music, photos that are stored on the smartphone. So it means that a phone with higher ROM will have more storage space and an average user would do with a 16GB or 32GB ROM but users that like to keep many applications and movies can go for 64GB or 128GB ROM or maybe buy an SD card as well.

CAMERA

Many smartphone users are mostly carried away by the number of megapixels but trust me, megapixels doesn't mean the smartphone camera will result in better images. other factors like ISO levels, aperture and auto focus are also very essential. The higher the number of pixel, the larger the image size. If you're a photo freak, a phone with 12MP or 16MP camera and an aperture of f/2.0 or lower, for nice results even in low lights. A non-photo freak can do with a smartphone of 8-12MP camera and aperture of f/2.2.

USER INTERFACE/OS VERSION

For the OS version, it is advisable to get a smartphone with the latest OS to avoid being outdated because as days goes by, new android versions are being released with lots of improvements and bug fixes to improve the security and enhance the user interface. The interface is the one that users will have to interact with everytime to access any other thing, so it is expected to be easy and simple to operate. For the most basic interface, you can buy Android one devices such as Infinix, Tecno and  the likes.

DISPLAY

A phone with a 5.5inch or 6 inch HD or QHD display is usually ideal if you often stream videos or watch movies most times with your smartphone. When a smartphone is larger than 6 inch display, it becomes bulky and heavy to handle or carry around but when it ranges from 5.5 inch  to 6 inch, it allows you to enjoy rich media experience while being light and easy to carry around in your pocket or purse. A regular user that mostly use the phone for social media and chatting might just consider a 5-inch to 5.5-inch full HD.

AVAILABILITY OF ACCESSORIES

When you want to buy a smartphone, make sure the smartphone accessories and parts are readily available in the area you stay, just in case maybe the phone slips off and the screen gets broken or maybe the phone charger gets spoilt . You don't want to start running helter skelter looking for where to get the spare parts to replace the damaged parts or end up dumping the phone to get a new one.

COST/PRICE

Imagine getting a phone worth 100,000 Naira just to show off and getting a phone at a the same price or maybe at a cheaper rate with better attributes.

Although, prices tend to increase as you demand better chain in terms of processor, memory,  camera and display but with this guide, you will know the amount of money to spend on your smartphone.
