Microsoft rolls out Windows 10 KB4052623 update to fix Windows Defender scanning errors

According to MSPoweruser, Microsoft rolled out KB4052623 security update for Windows 10 users today, and Windows Defender has been updated to v4.18.2003.8 version, which fixes Windows Defender scanning errors.

Windows Defender will always skip files during automatic and manual scans and give manual solutions. However, this time Microsoft's action to solve the problem is very fast, this update claims to solve the antivirus software scanning problem for all Windows 10 users.

Update information:

This package includes monthly updates and patches for the Windows Defender Antimalware platform released by Windows Defender antivirus software in Windows 10.

In addition to the major Windows 10 versions, monthly updates are also installed. Both types of updates should be installed to ensure continued protection against malware and other threats.

Known issues in this update:
  • New file path
Due to changes in file path locations in the update, many downloads were blocked when AppLocker was enabled.

To resolve this issue, open Group Policy and change the settings for the following path to Allowed:

% OSDrive% \ ProgramData \ Microsoft \ Windows Defender \ Platform \ *

  • Safe boot issues in version 4.18.1901.7

If Secure Boot is turned on, some devices running Windows 10 will not boot.

We are working on fixing this issue and plan to provide a fix in a future update. In the meantime, to resolve this issue, follow these steps:

Run sc query windefend to verify that the Windows Defender service is running.

Run sc qc windefend to verify that the Windows Defender binaries no longer point to version 4.18.1901.7.

1. Restart the device and enter the BIOS.

2. Close "Safe Boot" and restart the device again.

3. Run the following command in the command prompt management window:

"% programdata% \ Microsoft \ Windows Defender \ Platform \ 4.18.1901-7 \ MpCmdRun.exe" -revertplatform

4. Wait one minute, and then do the following:

  • Run sc to query windefend to verify that the Windows Defender service is running.
  • Run sc qc windefend to verify that the Windows Defender binaries no longer point to version 4.18.1901.7.

5. Restart the device, re-enter the BIOS, and then turn on Safe Boot.
  • Observed high network traffic
Businesses using network protection in audit or block mode may experience more network traffic than expected, which will leave their network and enter the Microsoft Defender Smart Screen related domain.

This affects customers running version 4.18.2001.10. We are working on a service update to resolve this issue. In the meantime, you can resolve this issue by temporarily disabling network protection.
