Apple announced iOS 14 for the iPhone and iPod during the WWDC 2020 conference on Monday (22), the update for iPhones will bring a redesigned home screen with widgets and App Library; videos in picture in picture mode; Siri with compact interface; new Memoji options; and even a way to create virtual keys for cars.
The software update brings all kinds of changes and improvements. In this article you can read what is new in iOS 14 and iPad OS 14.
The software update that will become available for the iPhones and iPods of recent years. For the iPad, iPad OS 14 is released, which adds special features for the iPad.
Set your default apps yourself
An interesting update is that in iOS 14 you can set which apps you want to use for your browser and mail by default. Previously, these were mandatory for Apple, Safari and Mail apps. It is not yet clear whether you can also set other standard apps, for example for your music. It doesn’t seem like it yet.
Widgets on the home screen
A second noteworthy innovation is that you can use widgets on the home screen of the iPhone. These complement the Today screen, which has been available for years. The widgets can be of all kinds of apps and can differ in size. You can place them between your apps to quickly view the weather forecast, your steps taken and more.
Android has had widgets support for years. iPad OS has also supported the feature for some time, but via a special screen.
Apple has created a compact app format that requires no registration form and time-consuming download. It will be possible to scan a QR Code or use an NFC tag to open a notification and install the App Clip, a piece of the main app with only essential features.
For example, if you want to rent a scooter, you can zoom in on the iPhone to activate App Clips notification; then, tap “Get”. Registration will be done through Sign In With Apple, and payment will be processed via Apple Pay .
App Clips will be created with the native SDK (software development kit) and must be less than 10 MB.
Hide apps and games
iOS 14 also includes the ability to hide apps and games on your home screens. A much requested feature, because not everyone is waiting for screens full of app icons or folders. Apple calls the feature App Library and states that iOS automatically sorts apps and games into groups. For example, the software creates a folder full of Apple Arcade games. Compare the feature to the app drawer that has been available in Android for years, but – it seems – smarter.
Siri, picture in picture and more
In addition to several major improvements, iOS 14 also contains several smaller changes. Take Siri. When you call up the voice assistant, it no longer takes up the entire screen. Instead, Siri only appears at the bottom of the screen, and only fills the screen when giving an answer or command. Siri can now also send voice messages, instead of converting your voice message to text.
In addition, iOS 14 introduces a picture in picture mode for all apps. This means that you can display a video as a small floating window while typing a message in WhatsApp or viewing your route in Google Maps.
Apple is also giving iOS 14 an improved version of its map service Apple Maps, although the main improvements are only for US users.
Messages and Memoji
The Messaging app has been updated with three main features. Conversations now allow you to respond to specific messages by organizing them on a separate thread.
You can pin conversations at the top by creating a circle-shaped shortcut with the photo of the person or group. It will also be possible to name specific people (something similar to @ mentions, but without @).
Memoji will have more accessory options to personalize your avatar, including a face protection mask; and more variants with different ages (younger or older).
It will be possible to create virtual keys to open the car by bringing the iPhone closer to the door, starting with the BMW 5 Series of 2021. To start the engine, simply place the phone on the charging base and press the Start / Stop button. This uses NFC technology; in the future, Apple wants to adopt a standard based on Ultra Wideband.
They are stored in Secure Element for added protection, and can be shared with your contacts via Messages. This feature will also be offered for iOS 13.
feature will also be offered for iOS 13.

Install iOS 14 on your iPhone
You can install iOS 14 as of today if you are an Apple Developer Program member. Chances are you are not. In that case, you can install a public beta on your iPhone in July. The final update will be released in the fall, probably September.
iOS 14 will be available for all iPhones now running on iOS 13. Those are the iPhone 6S and newer, for example the latest iPhone SE 2020 . iPods that are suitable for iOS 13 will also receive iOS 14.
iPad OS 14
The improvements included in iOS 14 are also included in iPad OS 14. This software update will be available for iPads compatible with iPad OS 13 , and will be released in the fall just like iOS 14. A beta will be released next month.
Exclusively in iPad OS, functions are like a sidebar for many apps. They thus make more efficient use of the larger screen of an iPad compared to an iPhone or iPod. Apps such as Photos and Music immediately get a sidebar for, for example, faster switching between photo album and playlist.
Better search function
iPad OS 14 also has a better search function. It no longer takes up the entire screen, but appears in the middle of the screen and shows suggestions below. The search function can now also show contacts, website suggestions and more and is therefore smarter. This makes the search function more reminiscent of that of macOS.
Another innovation is that Scribble recognizes your handwritten notes and converts them to text. If you write ‘computer total’ in Safari with your Apple Pencil, the browser will go to our site.
