PlayStation officially announced the new wireless controller for the PS5: DualSense, with the addition of haptic feedback (Haptic feedback), and the appearance design has also changed significantly, using a double Tonal design.
The full text of the official introduction:
Regarding PlayStation®5, we have reached an exciting milestone. We will begin to provide game developers with a new wireless controller designed for the final version.
Developers will incorporate the unique features of the new products into their games. Until then, we want to give everyone in the PlayStation® family a first look and introduce you to the development vision of the new DualSense ™ wireless controller — “Talking with the virtual world created by games” to provide an unprecedented sensory experience.
The powerful functions of the DualSense wireless controller combined with PS5’s Tempest 3D audio technology will bring players a new sense of game immersion.
When PS4 was launched in 2013, the DUALSHOCK®4 wireless controller was highly praised by players and game developers. It is not only the best PlayStation® controller to date, but also brings forward-looking features such as the “Share button” Features. This begs the next question-how can we build on the success of our success?
After careful consideration, we decided to maximize the retention of the DUALSHOCK®4 features that players love, and on this basis, add new features and further improve the design.
According to our discussions with game developers, we found that the “tactile” and audio functions in the game are similar, and there is still a lot of room for improvement.
PS5 is a great opportunity for innovation, and we can use new controllers to allow game developers to find ways to further enhance the game’s immersion. This is why we have adopted Haptic feedback to allow players to experience a richer sense of touch during the game, such as the sense of heaviness when driving through muddy roads.
In addition, we have added Adaptive triggers to the L2 and R2 keys of the DualSense wireless controller, so that players can really feel the tension of the action, just like pulling a bow and shooting arrows.
It is an exciting challenge for us to add new functions and design new controllers based on this generation of products. For example, when designing Adaptive triggers, we must consider how the components are mounted on the controller without giving a heavy feeling. Our design team and hardware engineers work closely together to configure the location of Triggers and Actuators. Then the designer draws lines of the appearance of the controller, so that the controller feels smaller than it actually looks.
Finally, we adjusted the Trigger angle and fine-tuned the grip. We also carefully considered how to maintain the long service life of the rechargeable battery of the DualSense wireless controller and reduce the weight of the controller as much as possible with the addition of new functions.
Regarding the buttons, you may notice that the original “Share” button on DUALSHOCK®4 is gone. Don’t worry, it hasn’t disappeared. The “Share” button that we pioneered in the industry has been widely praised this time, and this time we brought a new “Create” button.
Through the “Create” button, we will once again lead a new user experience, so that you can share the wonderful game content to global players or your friends. More detailed functions will be announced later.
The DualSense wireless controller also adds a built-in microphone array, allowing players to easily chat with friends without headphones, which is ideal for quick communication. Of course, if you plan to chat for a long time, it is best to keep the headset at hand.
Next let’s talk about colors. The controller body in the past has only one color.
As you can see, we have adopted a different approach this time two-tone design. In addition, we also changed the position of the light bar to make it easier to see. On DUALSHOCK®4, the light bar is on the top of the controller, and now it is located on both sides of the touchpad, making the touchpad look and feel bigger overall.
In the past few years, we have tried a variety of concepts and hundreds of models before finally determining the current design plan.
In order to conform to ergonomics and allow players of different hand sizes to use comfortably, we conducted a lot of tests and experiments. The DualSense wireless controller hopes to give users the feeling that when you take the controller out of the box, it will be transferred to the game world.
The controller seems to be a part of your body, so that you will forget that you are still holding them.
We are very happy to show you the final design of the DualSense wireless controller.
We can’t wait to see how you get the controller.
