Google is a multinational technology company based in Mountain View, California. It was founded on September 4, 1998 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, until then students of Computer Science at Stanford University. The search engine was born from BackRub, a search engine that used more efficient methods to classify pages than competitors of the time. Google is a pun on the word “googol”, the name given to number 1 followed by a hundred zeros, symbolizing the huge amount of information present on the Internet.
